You load a damp pile of laundry into your Kenmore dryer and wait for it to dry. Instead, you hear some beeps and see the F01 error code flashing. Now your wet clothes are stuck in a dryer that won’t work!
The F01 error code signals a problem with the thermistor, which measures your dryer's internal temperature. Luckily, you can take steps to diagnose and fix this issue.
You’ll need a putty knife, a screwdriver, and a multimeter.
Find the service panel on the back or top of your dryer. It’s usually held in place by screws or clips.
Use the putty knife to rip out the panel if it's clipped carefully. If it’s secured with screws, use the screwdriver to take them out. Be careful not to damage anything around it.
Open the dryer door and find the lint screen, typically located at the top of the lint duct housing or the front.
Gently pull out the lint screen and set it aside to access the duct housing more quickly.
Look for screws or clips holding the lint duct housing in place, usually around its edges.
Remove any screws with your screwdriver or release the clips.
Carefully pull the lint duct housing away from the dryer, being cautious of any lint buildup.
With the lint duct housing removed, you can see the blower housing. The thermistor is situated above the blower housing.
You may need to disconnect any wires attached to the thermistor to remove it for testing or replacement entirely.
Set the multimeter to the ohms setting.
Place one probe on each of the thermistor's wire terminals.
A working Kenmore dryer thermistor should measure about 10,000 ohms at room temperature. If the resistance is much higher or lower, it’s likely broken.
The thermistor needs replacing if the resistance doesn’t change when using a heat source (like a hair dryer).
Check if your warranty covers the replacement of the thermistor. If not, buying a new one from the manufacturer is best to ensure quality.
Once you have the new thermistor, screw it in place and reconnect the wires.
Put the lint duct housing and control panel back in the reverse removal order.
Reconnect your dryer to the power source or turn the gas valve back on.
After trying all these steps your dryer should work properly. If it doesn’t work, or if you don’t have enough time or the right tools to troubleshoot further, please consider taking professional help.
